Varian did indeed trip, but as he fell, he saw the shadow itself trip him. Normally a person would react angrily or in pain after such a trip, but Varian instead seemed amazed. "I KNEW IT! This is incredible! A sentient shadow! Though is the shadow it's own being or is it an extension of your will? Also, what happens to it when all the lights go out?" Varian ask the doctor ask curiosity got the better of him and he wanted to know more about this shadow. As he had just rounded off his conversation with Mozenrath the last thing he had expected was to be swarmed with questions that really he never bothered with or that he had no interest in answering. Heck, he probably didn't even care about the answers himself. Still he looked curiously at the young boy as he was now absorbing his attention as he pretty much forgot that just a moment a man with a tentacle beard had entered the room... and was watching him as of now. "Well, I never asked myself such... interesting questions." he admitted to the boy as he looked at him as he gave a small smirk. "But I can say he is far from the only sentient shadow I got up my sleeve." he added as he watched his own shadow who just shrugged having not thought THIS was the reaction Varian would have given. Varian was a bit surprised by how Dr. Facilier didn't seem to know how his own shadow functioned. But then again, it seemed pretty common for so called magic users to use magic without fully understanding how their own powers work. "Interesting. Don't suppose you'd be open to letting me examine one of those shadows in my lab? Understanding how these shadows work can open up new worlds of possibilities. Of course, such an examination would have to wait until I finish my other projects first. I'm already hands full with a few new inventions I'm building to help you and your friends in the Five, plus a some special request for one of my new friends." Varian mentioned hoping to try and pique his interests in his works and try and impress one of the Five. Maybe then, he'd get more support for the automaton project and future experiments.

"That is all very interesting..." he told Varian as he seemed to be the least interested in whatever the boy was doing. From what he saw he seemed to be much more interested in how magic worked instead of seeing what it could do for someone. There was very little to work with him outside of offering one of his Friends to be studied. And the idea didn't really appeal to him. "But tell me... in what way do you think it would benefit me?" he asked suddenly as he still was willing to give the boy a chance. If it was something about conquering again, he had very little interest honestly in territory gain. That was mostly for Maleficent. For him, it was more in how much more luxury he could get in the quest and how to best profit from whatever experiment Varian was thinking of.

He could tell from Dr. Facilier's reaction that he was a hard man to impress. Luckily, Varian did have an idea that might help him impress magic users in the group. "Well my biggest project is a bit hard to believe until you see it for yourself in my lab. Though right now I'm working some more interesting experiments with using my own potions and combining them with the more arcane powers courtesy of the others like Mozenrath to make them more powerful and useful. Like just earlier, me and Mozenrath were just discussing a variation of my growth formula to help Ratigan be as big as his intellect. My potion can make animals into powerful mindless monsters, but once we find something like a magic crystal to stabilize the formula, Ratigan can be bigger and smarter!" As he said that, he did wonder what would happen if that potion was used on Scar. Would it not work since he's human now, or would it somehow react to his original animal form and make him a wild giant lion. Something to ponder later. "Soon I'll be able to improve my potions and perhaps even some of my other inventions thanks to the resources of this castle. Not to mention make things easier for magic users such as yourself and Mozenrath. With the power of science, we can make produce potions and machines that can have effect similar to magic that more easily and faster. So you'll no longer having to toil over magic cauldrons, or whatever you use for magic." Varian said as he figured from the look of this Doctor Facilier that he was a business man. So as much as Varian didn't like the word magic, he knew that appealing to those who used magic and convincing them he could help their magic would likely allow him to make good allies here. Besides, getting a chance to study magic would allow him to actually uncover it's secret and reveal the science behind the superstition.

He cared not for the state he had now left the back of the archive in - a goblin would surely come around to pick up the mess. The lich straightened up before Mozenrath, now eyeing him up. "Have you concluded your flirtations with the lion-man and the crooked doctor? Far be it from me, a shambling corpse and his promises for worlds-wide conquest and power, to keep you from going on a... what's the word the common folk used... a date, was it... with such smooth-talking scoundrels." Tempting. Very tempting. But...Mozenrath was Mozenrath. "Business first," he insisted. "My...dalliances are low-priority compared to the tasks at hand." He rather wished he could shirk...but it was hardly in his nature to procrastinate a dark deed because of a handsome smile. (A very, very handsome smile, with teeth that seemed to gleam and sparkling violet eyes.)

It felt like he should be offended but it slightly amused him that someone who seemed even more foolish than him was attempting to explore magic. Though the doctor still prefered to seperate true magic from voodoo. Voodoo came at a price, true magic was snapping your fingers to make money appear out of thin air. "If this Ratigan wanted to be bigger he could have seen me, I would have been eager to help him." he stated only as he looked again at Varian as he was quite unsure about the boy. He seemed really eager and curious to uncover hidden truths but if the doctor had learned something some truths were best never learned. It is why he had things he had never tried after all. Certain bits of magic weren't something someone should experiment with. "Even if you succeed in bringing voodoo to just being magic bottles I would suggest you would stop your work right there boy. Not for my sake but for the sake of beings that are rather protective of the art." he finally warned him as he smiled now and leaned on his cane. "It's a tip of the hat. Use it well and don't dig deeper where you shouldn't dig."

Not a single one of these archived scrolls holds a detailed layout of the castle," the Horned King grumbled, motioning towards the multiple papers scattered across the floor. "Whether by fool's luck or sheer happenstance, Candy was able to locate a map with relative ease. I could have claimed his as my own, but to cause more of a scene within the archive is far too much of a headache to bare." "I have half a mind to simply take a room for the cauldron's resting place, but that may just make more of a fuss. Perhaps you have some insight that I am not privy to that can aid us?"

It did strike a bit of a chord with Varian as often times, people told him not to pursue his interests in science and exporation. Granted, Facilier was a lot nicer than some people had been to Varian. But it hurt having someone look down on his inventions. And that hurt was leading to anger as he wanted to prove the doctor wrong. Still, this was one of the Five he was talking to, and Varian was smart enough to hold back his anger and just limit it to clenching his fists. "Thank you for the tip, but I should get back to work on my other projects." Varian said as he started walking past Facilier. (OOC: Think I should have Varian bump into Dav Jones on his way out or just have him head back to the lab?)

There before him stood a pirate, but not just any pirate. This one didn't even look human as instead of a beard, this one had tentacles like an octopus, he was covered in barnacles, most of his body seemed soaking wet even while on dry land, and even had a crab like claw for one of his hands. Varian had seen many strange things recently from talking rats, metal vehicles, animals turned to men, and just saw a living shadow. But this took the cake for the strangest thing he had seen today. And possibly the second most frightening next to the Horned King. The Horned King reminded Varian of death and decay, while this one was just unnatural. It's probably thanks to meeting the Horned King that this fellow didn't seem as frightening. Though that doesn't mean Varian was still a bit shocked as he stared down the next new member of the alliance. "...Uhhhh...Hello." Was all Varian could muster at this point thanks to the shock of seeing someone that looked more at home under the sea.

Facilier gave a shrug as he finally had been freed from many conversations. He guessed he might have offended Varian but honestly letting the boy tinker with his Friends...
He still had unresolved nightmares of his own death, being dragged down by them. The boy as eager as he was wasn't prepared for what the Other Side held. If he really wanted to, he could still lend him a shadow when he had the time for it.
Now he had to return to his own current project as he sat across from Scar and looked at him as he was wondering how much damage was wrought there.
"So...is it a good book?"

Jones had known a few alchemists in the past, one of which was one of the most powerful and ruthless pirate lords he had ever known. However, whether or not this Varian was capable of reaching such heights of power remained to be seen, but the captain couldn't deny that was interested in finding out. "I am Davy Jones, captain of The Flying Dutchman, and lord of the sea." Jones set aside his book (a volume of fabled magical artifacts that had so far failed to interest the captain) and eyed the boy. "You seem rather young to be among such company. Tell me, what ambitions brought you to join this dark crew?"

Tell me, what ambitions brought you to join this dark crew?" "Hmph, the funny thing was my ambitions were good at first. All I did was try to warn people about a new threat to the kingdom, but the king lied and covered up that threat until it was too late. At first I thought the princess and her friends would help me, but I was wrong. When I needed them most, they ignored me and threw me out as I begged the princess to save my father! After that, I swore I would make the kingdom of Corona pay for what they did to me and my father. I launched an attack with a mechanical army and captured the Princess, until she used her magic to stop my machines. But now that I'm part of this 'dark crew', when I return to Corona, I will make Princess Rapunzel and everyone in Corona pay for what they did." After Varian spoke about his story, he started wondering about Davy Jones' story. Where did he come from? And was he ever human? There were many questions Varian had about such an unusual entity. Though Varian was a bit hesitant to ask and thought it would be best to let him reveal his past if he wanted too. Chances were pirates like him wouldn't like sharing much about themselves. He doubted monster pirates would be even less willing.
